Chandler Horizon Rotary Club Raises $2450

The club had an afternoon of fun at Chase field on June 14th . Members of the club sold tickets to family and friends to raise money which will go to some of the charities we support. Some tickets were also donated by club members to the Boys & Girls Club and homeless U.S. Veterans so they, too, could enjoy the outing.

Last Minute Donations

Help Homeless Kids in Chandler

The Chandler Horizon Rotary Club rallied together to find away to provide backpacks and school supplies for the many homeless children in Chandler. With school starting, there is a great need to help those who can’t afford the necessary supplies to attend school.  The club contributed $1000 to help with this effort, from funds raised at a DBacks event they had in early June. Many club members brought backpacks to the weekly meeting to be donated. Club member Marty Herder, who took on the project, along with his wife, Ann, and their daughters, purchased backpacks and supplies with the money the club donated. They delivered 70 backpacks to the school district.

Dianne Rish, introduced by Brent Patmos, told us about her experiences as the Rotary District 5510’s Ambassadorial Scholar to Chile. She explained how she became aware of the program and the steps she took to make the application.  She gave us the high points of her trip and how it had enriched her life.  She also shared some of the Rotary projects she was involved in while visiting Chile and how she planned to get involved in some of the Rotary projects here.

Group Study Exchange Set for trip to Scotland

District 5510 has chosen the Group Study Exchange team that will travel to Scotland at the end of this month. Karen Panietz, the Rotarian traveling with them is from the Ahwatukee Foothills Club.  Karen presented a great program starting with how the GSE program came to be, what the qualifications were for those applying and how the team was evaluated and finally picked to go.  She said the group will visit and speak to Rotary clubs, learn about businesses comparable to their own, enjoy the culture and food of Scotland and do some sightseeing and shopping. She also noted that the current Rotary International Rotary President, John Kenny, is from Scotland.

Chandler Third Grade Students

Receive Dictionaries

The Dictionary Project is underway for Fall delivery 2009! Rotary District 5510 will distribute over 4000 dictionaries to third grade students this Fall. The Chandler Horizon Rotary Club has committed to donate 600 dictionaries to five Chandler schools. Rotarians will come together in October to organize the dictionaries for delivery. The Dictionary Project takes place around the world by Rotary Clubs to distribute as many dictionaries as possible to third grade students. In third grade, students are beginning to learn word and dictionary skills. Giving each student a dictionary to own and take home, allows children the opportunity to develop important word skills and enables parents to be in a better position to assist their children with homework. The dictionary has over 25,000 entries and over 16,000 sample sentences. It has 1500 full color photographs and illustrations. It contains useful information including maps of the world, weights and measurements, the planets, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, sign language and other interesting tables and facts. Our club is proud to be part of such a worthy project for our young people.  Visit our Photo Gallery

Donation to The Clothes Cabin Will Help

In the Effort to Dress The Working Poor

It all started when a group of women came together to collect socks to give to local organizations who were helping those in need. Socks were given to homeless shelters, schools and places who could provide socks to those who didn’t have any.

One Small Step was making a difference.

Then when the Chandler Christian Community Center closed the clothing give away program, the same group of women opened The Clothes Cabin. Recently, members of the Chandler Horizon Rotary Club, cleaned out their closets and donated bags of gently used clothing. To further assist the effort, the club made a monetary donation toward startup costs.
